Hip Replacement FAQs

What is a hip replacement?

A hip replacement is a surgical procedure to remove a diseased or damaged hip joint and to replace it with an artificial implant. The device is comprised of a steel stem and ball, which are attached to the thigh bone, and a socket, which is fitted into the pelvis. When the two parts of the implant are joined, the device allows for a smooth, pain-free, natural movement.

When is a hip replacement necessary?

When all other forms of treatment and therapy to ensure movement and to control pain have been exhausted, and the diseased or damaged hip compromises daily activity, a hip replacement is needed as a quality of life measure.
