Irregularities beset Darfur poll vote

April 14, 2010 - 6:10 am No Comments

Only a few thousand people are expected to vote in Darfur’s internally displaced persons camps due to under-registration, but proceedings did not go smoothly for those who did turn out to cast their vote.

There were complaints that many ballot papers were delivered to the wrong places, and some candidates said their names did not even appear on the ballot papers.

The candidates took their complaints to the electoral commission but it said the irregularities were too many to count.

Sudan opposition mulls poll boycott

April 5, 2010 - 3:13 am No Comments

As Sudan prepares for national elections set for April 11, tensions are rising as some opposition groups call for a postponement of the poll date and threaten to boycott the vote.

They claim that it is not the right time to hold elections as many candidates have not been given the fair opportunities to carry out a significant electoral campaigns in the volatile country.

But Omar al-Bashir, the president, has accused authorities in the previosuly independent south of obstructing his campaign efforts.

He has warned that a boycott could result in the cancellation of next year’s referendum on independence for South Sudan.

Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Adow reports from Khartoum.

Indiana Nuns, Problems w/ Voting at Polls

March 17, 2010 - 9:17 pm 1 Comment

There were problems with the primaries in Indiana. Twelve nuns were not allowed to vote because of Indiana’s strict new law requiring a valid, current photo ID in order to vote. Seven percent of Americans lack the required paperwork to prove citizenship, which is required to get a government-issued ID in many states. Strict laws that require these documents at the polls disenfranchise voters – and are a solution in search of a problem. Voter impersonation fraud was documented only 24 times from 2002 to 2005 throughout the country. The primaries in Indiana did not go off without a hitch.

All Americans have the right to vote, even if they don’t have access to a valid, current photo ID. Our democracy works best when all Americans participate.
