Voter registration ends after four-day extension
The manual voter registration exercise has come to a close. The exercise, which had been extended by four days, is projected to have netted close to 12 million voters. But as Brenda Mulinya reports, the electronic registration will go on for two more weeks.

The interim independent electoral commission extended the period on Wednesday evening citing pleas from voters. The commission says the exercise will now close on Sunday, by which time it hopes to have registered 1.5 million new voters. But as NTVs Peninah Karibe reports, those new numbers will not come cheap.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has urged Kenyans to start re-building their confidence in the countrys electoral process saying it will bring change and objectivity after it was eroded following the 2007 general election. Speaking In Kibera where he launched the Electronic Voter Registration, Raila commended the IIEC for conducting a trial of the electronic voter registration in 18 different constituencies. Raila challenged the IIEC not to allow complacency to take root in the commission. IIECs first task after the on going voter registration will be to conduct a referendum on the draft constitution.

The Electronic Voter Registration launched two days ago was expected to speed up the exercise in many parts of the country. But there is still a clear indication that there will be a last minute rush. Officials are raising the alarm over the slow pace of voter registration. Queues at registration centres are getting shorter each day.

As the draft constitution gets down to the homestretch, the interim independent election commission is setting another stage. The commission will tomorrow(Sunday) launch the electronic voter registration process in readiness for the referendum. The ceremony will kick off in Kibera, one of the pilot constituencies. 18 constituencies have been selected for the process with an estimated 1.8 million people targeted for the process.
